Bird Watching

Many people all over the world are occupied with bird watching. It’s a hobby that has become particularly popular in Greece in the last few years, gaining a lot of devoted fans of bird watching.

Bird watching is the easiest observation among the group of wild animals since birds, more than the other animal species, offer themselves for this purpose because their ability to fly makes it easier to see them. The observation of their behavior, the discovery of a selection of colors and the sound of their bird call is truly a unique experience. The contact with the rest of our “roommates” of the planet often requires exciting discoveries in new places, where new experiences and sceneries are revealed in combination with entertainment and knowledge.

Pink flamingos, white swans, delicate little egrets, flouncy local partridges, petite kestrels. Lemnos is their home.

An in-between rest stop and an overwintering spot for dozens of species of immigrating birds,Lemnos is the ideal birdwatching choice.

This model of mild development that the island followed and the existence of places with minimum human intervention, set Lemnos as a unique choice for birdwatching lovers. Goggles, cameras and love for nature is the main equipment. Bird watching is an activity of scientific interest and an aesthetically pleasing experience.

A one-of-a-kind wetland on the entire Aegean sea, Hortarolimni-Salt Lake Aliki is a top choice for birdwatchers, with a total acreage of almost 18.000 acres, integrated in the Natura 200 site.More than 30 immigrating and indigenous species ,such as egrets, herons, kestrels, local partridges and flamingos spend their winter there. You can enjoy their glory from the bird observatories that exist in the three lakes,in accessible spots.

Important wetlands are located scattered on the island and host important bird populations: the Moudros gulf, the airport region, Palaio Pedino and Nea Koutali.

Except the wetlands, you can also interact with rare birds in residential areas. In the villages Roussopouli ,Repanidi , Kondopouli and Kalliopi kestrels and petite hawks nest close to people , and make their nests in roof bricks or ruins.
